Lauren Wood
The review
‘Fallen,’ a pop song of overflowing sensitivity, strikingly contrasts a buoyant rhythm with a slightly husky voice. Its use in Pretty Woman brought attention to this naturally gifted woman singer-songwriter. She has recorded as Ilene Rappaport, under the nickname Chunky and, after going solo, as Lauren Wood. A unique, slightly unconventional sensibility accompanies her delicacy. She began in her home town of Pittsburgh with the psychedelic six-piece Rebecca and the Sunnybrook Farmers, formed with her brother, a violinist. Three members went on to become Chunky, Novi & Ernie, recording through Ted Templeman's household and collaborating with the Doobie Brothers and Montrose.
Her solo career began in 1979. The first album continued the trio's approach, but on this second she joined newer names Peter Bunetta and Rick Chudacoff, formerly of Crackin'. Her duet with Robbie Dupree, whom they had brought to success, is good too, but it is her own recording of a song written for Nicolette Larson that especially stands out.
