Libby Titus
The review
An album backed by an extraordinarily distinguished cast. Phil Ramone, Paul Simon, Robbie Robertson and Carly Simon produced; among the players are John Tropea, then Laura Nyro's guitarist, John Guerin, Max Bennett, Hirth Martinez and Will Lee, musicians associated with Joni Mitchell's rhythm section. Libby Titus co-wrote ‘Love Has No Pride,’ sung by Bonnie Raitt, with Eric Kaz, and her own version is included here.
There is also a cover of Cole Porter's ‘Miss Otis Regrets,’ but every song has splendid lyrics and an equally splendid way of expressing them. Within its New York sophistication, the singing evokes images as if one were watching short films. Even within that same city, its expression resembles a road movie depicting relations between men and women, rather than Laura Nyro's emotional intensity.
At the time of this review, Titus was Donald Fagen's wife and no longer appeared in public. She left her elusive debut and this album. The grace of her withdrawal adds a mysterious echo to the record.
