Mark-Almond

The review

Mark-Almond was formed by British singer-songwriter Jon Mark and multi-instrumentalist Johnny Almond, active in the jazz-rock scene. Their four early-1970s albums blended varied elements around jazz and folk, developing an experimental sound rich in feeling. After a pause, they reunited in America. This first album following their move was released by Tommy LiPuma's Horizon label.

LiPuma had helped establish an adult-contemporary direction through his work with Nick DeCaro and George Benson; here he brings out Mark-Almond's mellow appeal. With the pair in New York, supported by local musicians including John Tropea on guitar, Steve Gadd on drums and Ralph MacDonald on percussion, Mark's whispering vocals and their delicate musical textures merge quietly into the city's night. The chic transformation from their former pastoral lyricism to an urban sensibility is splendid.
