At My Age

Nick Lowe

The review

Since his beginnings in the 1960s, Nick Lowe has moved through pub rock, punk, new wave and British rock as both musician and producer. His bands included Brinsley Schwarz and Rockpile, and his solo work has always carried a deep affection for American music. His marriage to Carlene Carter, Johnny Cash’s daughter, was another connection with that world.

Here he faces the America he loves with unhurried attention. From the simplest of band sounds emerge the distilled essences of country, jazz and R&B, filtered through rock’n’roll. It is a beautifully clear sound, yet it never feels dry or overly severe; Lowe’s understated delivery has its own lightness.

Bill Kirchen, a friend from the 1960s, and Chrissie Hynde, who produced his debut single, appear. As on The Convincer, the same core musicians provide the backing, with softly coloured horns as a restrained accent. Time passes pleasantly in this company.
