ADULT CONTEMPORARY
Partners in Crime
Rupert Holmes
The review
From the mid-1980s onwards, Rupert Holmes became best known for composing and writing Broadway musicals, earning a Tony Award. He also wrote television scripts and published novels. Before that he worked as a singer-songwriter and producer, releasing his debut Widescreen in 1974 and another album, Scenario, in 1994.
As the title and sleeve of Partners in Crime suggest, Holmes has consistently created urbane, cinematic pieces with the flavour of short stories in The New Yorker. Born in Northwich, England, in 1947, he moved with his family to the New York suburbs at six and continued to work in the city. His fifth album is a representative work, including the American hits ‘Escape’ and ‘Him.’ Its songs resemble short stories depicting the subtle relations between adult men and women with a stylish touch. A fine record in which polished sound adds to the attraction of the stories.
