Stephen Bishop

The review

Stephen Bishop attracted attention when his songs appeared on Nick DeCaro’s Italian Graffiti in 1974 and Art Garfunkel’s Breakaway in 1975. Released at the end of 1976, this debut remained in Billboard’s US album Top 100 for thirty-two weeks from January 1977, becoming a long seller. It also produced ‘On and On’, which reached No. 11, and ‘Save It for a Rainy Day’, which reached No. 22.

His writing belongs to a line that leads back to Broadway musicals and Hollywood film music. Each song feels like a passage from a sophisticated short story, sometimes bittersweet and romantic.

While making further solo records, Bishop was also chosen to sing the theme for the 1982 film Tootsie: ‘It Might Be You’ reached No. 25. For the 1985 film White Nights, he supplied ‘Separate Lives’, which Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin took to No. 1.
