Sting
The review
Sting’s solo work has often sought a sound with one foot in jazz and a freedom beyond conventional rock. The challenge was already clear on Bring on the Night, where he worked to shed The Police’s shadow. This live album expresses that spirit from a different angle. The plan was to perform at his home near Figline Valdarno in Tuscany, transmit the concert online, and release it on CD and DVD.
The date chosen was 11 September 2001. When the attacks in New York occurred, Sting and his musicians faced the question of whether to continue. They performed as a tribute to the victims, and the event acquired a weight and gravity quite unlike its original intention.
Drummer Manu Katché and jazz trumpeter Chris Botti are among the musicians. ‘Roxanne’, ‘If You Love Somebody Set Them Free’ and other favourites are reimagined, with ‘Fields of Gold’ taking on an even stronger jazz character and ‘Every Breath You Take’ revealing a mature new expression. The muted trumpet’s sorrowful tone suggests mourning, consolation and a wish for peace. Familiar songs become quietly profound in this setting.
