Wilson Bros.
The review
These brothers, born in Michigan and raised in Arkansas, debuted after Kyle Lehning recognized their songs for England Dan & John Ford Coley's country side. Steve, born in 1951, had played in a local band. Gary, nine years younger, began guitar out of admiration for his brother, and they started working together around 1974. After a Big Tree single in 1978, their sole album followed on Atco the next year.
Despite the gait one might expect from their origins, their sound is polished, precise and natural. Steve Lukather's richly musical guitar enters among well-shaped melodies and supple voices. Even among his numerous sessions, few offer such high-quality featured, sexy playing. Centred on the brothers' songs, including the perennial favourite ‘Take Me to Your Heaven,’ the album also incorporates Todd Rundgren's fine ‘Can We Still Be Friends’ and Hollies covers without strain. Steve died in 2000, but this fine duo deserved more than a single album.
