1979 · THE LISTENING ROOM
Jolly Jive
Masayoshi Takanaka
The review
Less a fusion workout than a guitar-led resort-pop record, Jolly Jive makes its priorities clear from the start. The playing is tight and purposeful, but never too busy to let the hooks through. “Blue Lagoon” would become Takanaka's signature summer instrumental. “Radio Rio” turns toward a Brazilian party; “Taj Mahal” borrows a Jorge Ben groove; and “Parallel Turn” leans into an easygoing vocal charm.
This is Takanaka at his most inviting: bright melodies, a supple band and a run of songs that are catchy enough to dance to without demanding that you do.
