1982 · THE LISTENING ROOM
Smiling
Sentimental City Romance
The review
Sentimental City Romance had a phrase for their music: a seaside sound, running from city streets toward the coast. Smiling feels like an invitation to take that drive at an easy 60 kilometers an hour. “Smiling Face” asks for a smile through a delicate, almost shy emotional current, while “Honey Lady” opens the view to blue sea, sky and clouds.
Its light electric-piano tone and tight rhythm section understand exactly how much space to leave around a song. Their music may belong most naturally not to the city itself, but to a summer evening just outside it. That sense of a place, more than any label, is what makes this record linger.
